Window & Door Dealer Days to Feature Keynote Panel Discussion on Showroom Design

Earlier this month, the Window and Door Dealers Alliance (WDDA) announced a new panel discussion to be help at the Window & Door Dealer Days on the 19th & 20th of October. The panel will feature Window & Door Dealer of the Year award winners:

Here, Thurber will share his experiences creating his own ‘dream’ showrooms, discussing strategic design, product selection and placement, and mistakes to avoid. This will be followed by a networking break, giving attendees the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the participants about their own showroom strategies and challenges.

The WDDA also announced that the Flex-Screen, LLC, ODL, and PR Germany will participate in The Dream Showroom, along with previously announced companies: Loewen, Panda Windows & Doors, Pirnar, Plastpro, Reno-works, Summit Automation, alongside Associated Building Supply’s core vendor LaCantina Doors.

Los Gatos Showroom's 10-Year Anniversary Celebration!

IMG 0257We had our Los Gatos Showroom’s 10-year Anniversary Celebration on Thursday June 16 hosted by ABSi Sales Consultants Loren Monge and Lisa Kunz. Loren and Lisa both added their personal touch on it with balloons, raffles, Vendor tabletop merchandise and their impeccable hospitality. Factory representatives from ABSi’s core vendors, Western Window Systems, Reveal Windows & Doors, Jeld-WEN, Milgard and AG Millworks were on site to answer technical questions and give details of their products.

AG Millworks custom aluminum clad bi-fold patio doors and custom aluminum clad pocketing lift and slide doors were the perfect solution for their New England-inspired traditional home.

Bi-fold doors and windows fold open entire rooms to the outdoors in the playful pool/guesthouse living quarters and kitchen. In the great room of the main house, pocketing lift and slide doors disappear into the walls to create living space that flows out seamlessly onto the patio and pool areas. ABSi Hosted the Monterey AIA Event, "Four Minutes of Fame"

On Thursday February 11th, Associated Building Supply Inc., hosted the Monterey Bay AIA Event- “Four Minutes of Fame” in our new product showroom located in Pacific Grove. Here attendees were offered four minutes to speak, with or without props, on any topic desired, and received feedback from two distinguished Toastmasters. Experts Mary Jeanne Vincent, ATB, CL and Kevin Donohoe, CC CL personally reviewed each individual and provided private feedback on strengths and opportunities for improvement. With an open-mic form lead by Associated Building Supply, Vice President, Scott Thurber, we appreciate everyone taking time out to join this event and ABSi thanks everyone for their attendance.

ABSi provided attendees with free food, a casual atmosphere for everyone to mingle in along with a tour of the beautiful new showroom along with free personalized feedback on speaking skill from the experts at Toastmasters. There were prizes, raffles and Congratulations are in order for Cerisa Skinner, AIA at International Design Group for winning the raffle- dinner for two at Sardine Factory in Monterey!

With 30 years of window and door knowledge that will benefit our customers, ABSi Sales Consultants Tim Bradshaw and Connie Bradshaw are poised to provide the very best solutions for our customers. “The event was a great success as we had about 15 architects locally attend the event,” says ABSi Inside Sales Coordinator, Connie Bradshaw. “Our showroom is relatively new in the Monterey / Carmel area and we want to continue to get our name out in the community that we are a great source for windows and doors,” states Bradshaw. Architects, Builders and Homeowners can swing by the Pacific Grove showroom at any time, touch and feel the product and get answers to the most complicated project questions. 

ABSi’s key partners from Jeld-Wen (John Perkins), Euroline (Gary Anthony) and Reveal (Rob Holland) were able to join us for the event and chat up ABSI and our value as well as showcase their full product displays in our showroom. “With the huge success of this event, we are now primed for a partnership with the Monterey AIA for “Architecture Week” in April,” mentions Hall.

In markets like the California coastline regions of San Francisco and San Diego, where new home builds are priced well into the millions, it pays to be an expert in your product category. For Associated Building Supply, Inc., that specialty is windows and doors. And not just any doors and windows. At ABSi, they provide windows and doors to the builders of some of the most expensive homes in the country.

Led by longtime friends Scott Thurber and Chris Cole, Associated Building Supply, Inc. has a story that differs from many building materials dealers still climbing out of the recession. For ABSi, the focus on high-end windows and door products actually kept the business growing through the recession.

The two have known each other since they were both regional sales managers for a window company in the 1980s. Cole opened ABSi’s first location in 1993 in Oxnard, California. Since then, the company has grown to 13 locations, primarily high-end product showrooms specifically displaying unique window and door products. ABSi locations include a main office based at the Oxnard location and a satellite corporate office in Auburn, California. The remaining 11 locations are showrooms/sale offices in Burlingame, Berkeley, Sonoma, Dublin, Los Gatos, Pacific Grove, Oxnard, Calabasas, Costa Mesa, Torrance, and San Diego.

 

The high-end market has helped ABSi grow to a 2015 total sales revenue of $30.1 million, with a 2016 projection of more than $40 million. The fact of the matter is, while the economy struggled, those with more simply struggled less. “The affluent buyer will have resources even in bad times,” Thurber said.While higher-end products for higher-end homes have always been the company’s focus, Thurber said that product selection has never been mandated as so with the sales staff. “We’ve always been a wood clad seller,” he said, “so our non-commoditized custom offerings have always been a higher percentage of our sales.”

Thurber said ABSi sales staff, guided by the company’s product portfolio, have become specialists in the luxury home market. This has helped distinguish ABSi from its competitors in the market. Click HERE for the full article.

PRESS - DWM Magazine 2016. Housing Revs Up for Big Growth in 2016

Housing’s long, slow road back form the Great Recession has been full of fits and starts, but it appears to be finally hitting the accelerator. Most major forecasts released this fall see strong, steady growth for home construction into 2016 and beyond, bolstered by an improving economy. Though the housing market is currently at 53 percent of normal, by the end of 2016, single-family housing starts are forecast to hit more than 900,000 units, or about 74 percent of normal. That number could rise to more than 1 million units, or 91 percent of normal by 2017 especially as remodeling grew 6.8 percent in 2015 and is expected to grow 6.1 percent in 2016.

Scott Thurber, Vice President of Associated Building Supply Inc. says, “Housing prices continue to escalate on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the Bay Area from San Jose to San Rafael. We’re seeing the same in Southern California. The influx of foreign money, specifically China, into California is also driving demand in the housing market. We haven’t seen the real estate market this strong in the Bay Area and Southern California in years. The midrange segment is flourishing too, and seems to be enjoying the most significant appreciation. We’re watching sleepy beach town shift to destination resort areas, driving real estate prices and demand up. An example of this is Santa Cruz. Two years ago, a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath, non-ocean-view home was selling for $550,000. Today, the same home is selling for $780,000. This is a byproduct of Santa Cruz upgrading their downtown, community facilities and attracting more high-end business.” Click HERE to read the full article.

Over the weekend of Oct 16-18, 2015, Associated Building Supply, Inc., along with two of its premier vendors Pacific Architectural Millwork and Euroline Steel Windows & Doors participated in the 2015 Monterey Design Conference (MDC) located at the Asilomar in Pacific Grove, which is just a mile from ABSi’s Pacific Grove Showroom. Representing ABSi were sales consultants Tim Bradshaw and Connie Bradshaw, based out of the Pacific Grove Showroom. “It was a jam packed event and great exposure for ABSi,” said Bradshaw. For ABSi, it's a pleasure to support the AIA and its members whom we interact with frequently statewide. The booth was located at space #P11 in the Pavilion with brochures and sample products on hand. ABSi’s Vice President, Scott Thurber was elated as he believes, “Anytime ABSi can give back and support the AIA were all for it! The MDC was a great platform to present our name brand and Product Portfolio to high profile Architects statewide.”

Regional Account Manager, Rob Holland, represented Pacific Architectural Millwork at the MDC. “The atmosphere was very casual and very different than other architectural conferences/events that I have attended,” however “As always, I have a solid relationship with ABSi and their associates so that interaction and experience was great,” stated Holland. Representing Euroline Steel Windows & Doors was their National Sales Director, Brace Lake. Describing the atmosphere as, “festive and friendly.” Lake claims, “ABSi is a valued partner and it was a pleasure to meet architects from all regions of California.”

 

BraceABSi sponsored a one-hour CES course hosted by Holland and Lake. The course explained the design elements and benefits of large indoor/outdoor living spaces using quality manufacturers of fenestration products.  “It was a positive experience," specified Lake as both he and Holland were able to meet with esteemed architects, as well as other distinguished members of the industry.

Entering its fourth decade, the Monterey Design Conference (MDC) brings together the world’s leading architects and design thinkers for an intellectually vibrant weekend. According to Bradshaw, “Having a partnership at MDC with Euroline and PAM further increased our visibility, architectural confidence and gave us a unique opportunity to collaborate on the spot with architects looking for solutions for their projects both present and future.” With over 800 architects in attendance, this was an elite event to be able to engage with the architectural community at a distinct location, and Thurber concluded, “I believe its these type of events that move the ball forward for ABSi and put our name brand on the map as a resource for Architects.”

The house will demonstrate cutting-edge "smart home" technology to synchronize its demands with the needs of the electrical grid and communicate with both the resident and power provider to manage energy systems effectively. The design of the M-Power dwelling combines public and private spaces in three linear zones. Two climate-controlled living spaces are separated by an unconditioned, enclosed deck. These three zones act as climate buffers that maximize passive cooling in summer and passive heating in winter. The units act as a system of active and passive techniques of energy efficiency. FEATURE ARTICLE | Energy Efficiency For many dealers across the country, getting up to speed on the Energy Star v6.0 specification will be among their New Year’s resolutions. As of January 1, 2015, manufacturers must use the v6.0 product specification when labeling products for the North-Central, South-Central, and/or Southern Climate Zones. Energy StarManufacturers may continue to use the v5.0 product specification for the Northern Zone until January 1, 2016. For dealers, the education of their sales teams—and customers—will be crucial to a successful transition.

Energy Star v6.0 will impact some dealers more than others, according to Scott Thurber, vice president of Associated Building Supply, Inc. “It depends on the business model, the target audience, and what niche you’re after,” he says. “It is probably much more important in the remodel/retrofit market than it is for specialty/high-end that sells product solutions based on aesthetics.”

“Manufacturers give you tools and horse power when it comes time to talk energy,” Thurber says of his suppliers. For example, he says that Jeld-Wen’s architectural consultants put on training seminars and, “from a marketing standpoint, they provide a lot of materials.”

Olmsted Housing Will Improve Stanford's Recruiting of Coaches.
The construction of 25 housing units, including 17 single-family homes and four duplexes, designed primarily for athletic coaches and their families, is on a three-acre plot between El Camino Real and Olmsted Road. The Stanford Athletics housing project between El Camino Real and Olmsted Road, projected to make recruiting coaches easier, is completetd, according to Deputy Athletic Director Ray Purpur.

Like the nearby and newly opened faculty housing project on Stanford Avenue, the additional housing for coaches is intended to offset the extraordinary cost of living in the Stanford area. Often, newly hired staff members have trouble finding affordable living space near campus. "We're the most expensive housing market in all of Division 1A athletics," said Purpur. Having an on-campus housing option makes Stanford more competitive when recruiting talented coaches, he added. "Now, when we bring in a coach or an assistant coach, we can say, 'here's your salary, here's your team, and your budget and your benefits'," said Purpur. "And by the way, here's a house." Building Street Pic 2 Smallhomes for coaches has been part of Stanford Athletics' master plan for the past 25 years, Purpur said. The project was first proposed in 2007. The trustees gave construction approval to a scaled-back plan in April 2009. The Olmsted Road Staff Rental Housing, which includes 17 single-family homes and four duplexes for Department of Athletics coaches on 3 acres bounded by El Camino Real, Stanford Avenue and Olmsted Road. Each home is two stories and comes with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The houses, which Daycare Center Smallrange from 1,550 to 1,880 square feet, are each equipped with stainless steel appliances, a washer and dryer, and a big-screen television installed above a fireplace. "It's a little outrageous how nice they are," joked Purpur. All the houses are for rent only, which will allow for flexibility, since coaches tend to be transitory. The Athletics Department's long-term goal is for the complex to serve as transitional housing so that short-term coaches can avoid the logistical hassle that comes with moving, and long-term coaches can eventually afford a down payment on a house. Purpur said the project has been supported by Stanford alumnus John Arrillaga, who has been involved as project manager. "He's the driving force behind getting this done," said Purpur.

Although the buildings have not been completed, all the homes are spoken for. The neighborhood will be mostly populated with a mix of head and assistant coaches, although three of the units will be occupied by staff members from outside athletics. Purpur hopes that the neighborhood will be a fun, close-knit community. All the families moving into the new housing have children, and a large playground will be installed in the complex courtyard. "I think there's going to be huge barbecues outside where people talk about coaching philosophies," said Purpur. He hopes that the neighborhood will facilitate communication between coaches, eventually allowing more experienced coaches to mentor new ones.
